working moms  Reply with quote

I am a working mom. I work from 2:15 to 11:00 pm. I worry if there isn't any interaction with Bella. I play with her in the morning and after work. I get my son to play with her as well.

If you are a working mom I would like some suggestions that would make me feel better about leaving her. I always tell her I love her and that I will be back tonight. If I leave for a few minutes I tell her a few minutes and for a while I tell her a while.
The last thing I say when I leave is Love you Bella see you tonight. I love you. She will usually tell me I love you.
Deb and Bella Sad
Sad because I have to leave her. She has brought such joy to me and my husband.

Hi Debi,

I have to leave Pi from about 6:45am to 4:30pm or so, but I am off Wednesdays...

Pi comes out as soon as I get home on working days, and I always leave a radio on for him....

When I have come home and I can hear Pi from outside chirping away to the Radio, but as soon he hears the keys and front dorr opening the Chirping goes to a happy screeching...

Tee Hee.... As he is a Pionus he is not very cuddly and therefore really enjoys his toys and his own company..

Fi

Well, I'm not a working mom, but can I make some suggestions? Smile

You can hide food, in paper, in foraging toys etc.. So she has to search for food.. Smile
You can also leave the tv on, on a channel for children.. My fids LOVE tellytubbies! Wink

By the way, what would you say of another birdy, not in the same cage, to keep her company if you feel very guilty?
My avian vet said another bird works so great, even though it is in another cage..
But I can understand if you find this idea silly.. Smile

I'm not a working "mom" (unless being the mom of birds counts), but I work. I leave at 8:30 am and get home around 6 pm Monday through Thursday. I've found that Piper has surprisingly adjusted to my schedule. I see this on my days off with her. She is very active from like 7 am to 8:30 am before I leave work (cuz she is out of her cage with me before I go to work) and then she winds down, even if I'm home, around 10 or 11 am. Then she gets zombie-like around 1 or 2 pm (I think she must nap around that time when I'm not home). She perks up around 5 or 5:30 pm and is active until bedtime. She keeps that schedule whether I'm at work or not. And my Eclectus, who I've had for only half the time I've had Piper, has fallen into the exact same schedule. At the same time, I have seen Piper play like crazy with her toys when she is in her cage. I read that Senegals are good at being independent and keeping themselves amused and I've seen Piper do that very well. So I bet Bella is the same -- she knows when you leave and understands the routine. That should make you feel a bit better.

At the same time, what Sue said is great! The foraging is a fun idea and I always leave the radio on too. I'm not sure what impact getting our Eclectus has had on Piper but I have heard them chirping together at times.

During the school year I leave my house at 7am to go to University and get home at around 4-5, Mon-Fri. I spend all day Saturday and Sunday with my birds, and on weekdays as soon as I get home from school. I feel better knowing that I have more than one bird so they can keep eachother company. I would agree with Sue and Lyssie, adding a second bird would be great for keeping Bella company while you're at work.
