I know I know you all are shocked to see me post Well I do every once in a blue moon
Anyway I had 5 baby quail born 3 days ago. They were running around and looking fine. I go out today and there are only 3. I have no idea what happens to them when they die like that. They seemd healthy healthy, running fast here and there right along with mom and dad. Any of you all been raising them a long time and can give me some pointers on the well being of these things? Ive had these since last year with only 2 clutches that have grown to be adults. Of course I have had the snake problem which is fixed now but I have still found a baby dead here and there and don't know why Thanks... |

They eat the finch food that the finches drop so I don't know if maybe some of it is getting stuck in their little throats or what. This morning everyone was ok still 3 left I don't know too much about these button quail. I just got them to kind of help clean up the bottom of the pens when the others drop seed. They are soooo cute when they are firt born Then it is so neat to wath them with their parents. They get under their dad too and that is so sweet |

hey Dana
I'm so sorry to hear about your two baby quails.
Unfortunately baby quails have a very high mortality rate. I haven't had much luck with the survival rates of my babies either. out of 12 babies hatched, I've had 5 passed away. four for no apparently reasons that I can see.
One of the reason I do know that cause the death of little babies are the cold weather. If they can't keep up with the mommy or daddy they would get cold quite easily and because of their feathers, they can't keep warm by themselves very well.
Baby quails require high protein in the food. If they are only getting finch food, they aren't getting enough proteins. This may be a reason for the early 'departure' of the little darlings. I generally feed my quails with chick starter crumble and also about 6 mealworms a day or every other day. Finch food won't make them choke. They won't swallow anything they aren't capable of swallowing, so it's fine. Afterall if they can swallow a whole mealworm intact, I'm sure a seed or two isn't a problem.
Oh, speaking of that, new born baby quails aren't able to eat large chunk of food, they may have starved to death if they can't find food fine enough to eat and swallow by their little beak.
How are the other three little ones?
Sorry I Haven't replied until now, but like Sue mentioned, I haven't been on holiday, in fact I'm on my way home now to Perth, Australia. I'm using the free internet in Singapore airport. Gotta love the internet service since I'm here for SEVEN hours in transit!! |

Don't know when I'll have babies but I keep watching the nest. Have to keep an eye out for those little things with these cold nights they might get away from their mommy. |

Just found this thread. I've just started breeding button quails myself and I'm still finding out things. I have had one sucessful clutch of 10 so far (3 I hatched out in an incubator and added to the ones that Lu (my mother quail) hatched). I have just had another clutch of 7 hatch out a couples of days ago.
Im feeding the parents on a mixture of finch food and turkey starter with occasional mealworms and earthworms. The babies get a softfood mix which they really go for.
My softfood mix includes:- egg & biscuit, wombaroo granivore and insectivore, a high protien baby cereal, and calcium and vitamin drops.
I kinda just guess at amounts but I usually put in more granivore and egg & biscuit than I do baby cereal and insectivore. I also decrease the amount of water as the chicks grow. My birds love this mix and my first clutch are really healthy and good looking birds. I even feed this mix to my parent quails between clutches to keep Lu's nutrition up.
The other option would be to crush some of the parents food so that the babies can eat it better.
The quail need thier own bowls for food, water and grit and they really appreciate a sand bath as they dont bathe in water. They also like fresh fruit and greens. Grit is definately essential as they cant husk thier seeds like parrots and the grit helps grind the food.
If your cage is large you could try fencing off a section of floor with really small mesh when there are chicks to make it easier for them to get back to thier parents.
Quail hens may be like chickens and lay whenever they arent sitting or looking after chicks. If your birds are like this u may want to give the female extras, mainly calcium and protien as her life span could be shortened otherwise.
One last note. It might be a good idea to put marbles in the quails water dish as the babies can drown easily.
I hope all this helps and I hope I havent gone overboard its just that I love quails too and I'm a research fanatic with things I love (Go the internet!).
Cangrats and good luck! |

Have you tried looking at on line classifieds? Sorry, I don't live colse to you so I'm not much help, but from what I've seen average cost is about $5-$20 depending on the breed.
You can look here, but they normally don't sell just 1 or 2
