| Ringnecks and quail, do they mix? |
|
|
I may be moving soon and getting an aviary for my male ringneck parrot. It will most likely be a hexagonal one, kinda medium sized. I was just wondering if I would be able to put some of my quail in there with Shrek or if he would attack them. I have 11 quail atm and I would like to give them as much room as I can so I wanted to put the 8 males in there. I would be putting potted shrubs and low trays of tall grasses in the bottom as well as some hidey holes (most likely upside down ice cream tubs). Would this work or should I just set the aviary up for my ringneck and leave it at that? P.S. I was also thinking of getting Shrek a mate, would this affect the situation at all? Thanx |

as far as I know, quails get along with all sorts of birdies hovering above them as long as they have their personal space which sounds like you have already thought of. I don't think it'll matter whether it's one or two or more IRN in there with the quails. |

I recently saw small aviary displays at the county fair. One of them had Ringnecks, Bourke's, finches, and quail at the bottom. The only thing I'd wonder about is if the Ringnecks got into breeding mode if they'd get territorial, but if you only have Quail in there, they are always at the bottom so they probably wouldn't care about them down there would be my guess. Good luck with your new aviary! |

yeah as a rule, those birds that hovers around the top of the aviary generally leave those 'bottom dwellers' alone as they are not a threat.. hehe |

oh I know, I have one that would follow me around when I'm walking on the outside of the aviary.. He'll go into a full protection mode, and he'll follow me around and around, and if I dare enter his territory, he will lunge at me!! Many a times I've found budgie poops on the poor little guy too.. hehe. I love watching them.. I got one of them to perch on my finger too... so cute. |

Thanx, I kinda thought as much ne way but it neva hurts to get a second opinion (or third etc.). Im hoping if I put enough plants in there the quail will be able to escape the poop. They really are the cutest little birds. They know what their food container looks like now so whenever they see it they get really excited cause they know that they are going to get thier food replenished. I used to love watching them when they took thier sand baths too but all the stores in my area have stopped selling sand grrr The poor little things have to resort to bathing in the wood shavings that I put down as a floor covering. Does ne one have ne ideas of what I could give them to bathe in? They didnt like the idea of bathing in fine grit cause it was prolly too sharp for them. Hopefully they will be able to dig out a good bath in thier new home when they go in but I'll still need something for the girls. |

I go to city farmers (not sure if you get them over there) and get kiddy play sand for the quails. they love that. I used to always just use dirt around the house for them. they didn't mind that either.. but they love the play sand... one day when I swapped over to the playsand, I swear i thought that one of my quails is dead!! he just laid there like a dead quail!! didn't move until I went into the aviary all panicky!! What a little stinker.. he loved it that much, he just laid there enjoying it!! LOL.
do you have garden centres that might sell river sands? you know places like soil ain't soil... they sell them in bags, so may be you can get those?!?!? |

I just saw your diary, and I must be blind... I can't find the Quails!
I loved seeing the pics of the wild Toos at the park. Your husband was carrying 3 Starions!! I loved it! They are so much bigger than Starion is. |

Aww, such cute Quails! Even the adults are cute
I had fun looking at your whole diary... you have a great one!
Do you still have the chickens? Besides Specky, they all look alike! How can you tell them apart at a glance? |

You looked at all 85 pages of my diary pages?? wow...
yes those quails have a very adorable look about them. very innocent look, but they are actually quite viscious.. that's another story though.. hehe..
I still have two out of the five that I first started off with. They are getting old though. I have Specky and Pecky still... They actually look quite different. have different tone in the brown/red, and the they have different cream spots. and also different personality. Pecky is more game, and she likes to follow you around and peck at your feet, though she hasn't done that for awhile.. hence her name... Pecky!! hehe.. Specky is much laid back, and of course, has more specks on her.. so specky.. hehe. |
