My new QP - Mojito  Reply with quote

Hi everyone -

Well last weekend I added a Quaker to my two budgies. They are of course separated for safety.

I know it is early to expect any real trust from Mo, but I am having trouble getting him to step up. He was hand-fed and is very sweet, but I am afraid he doesn't have any confidence in my hand. He has stepped up from the edge of his cage a couple of times, but no matter how steady I hold my hand he flaps around and acts like he's falling off. Confused

I am worried that he will think that he can't step up because my hand isn't safe for him. He is only 9 weeks old so he doesn't have the greatest balance anyway. He perches pretty well and is moving around his cage with more confidence each day. But I can tell that he sometimes gets off balance and he hasn't figured out how to really "hop" from perch to perch like my budgies do.

Is there any way I can help him with his step up? My budgies got the idea pretty quick, but Mo acts like it is the most unnatural thing to do. Thanks for any replies.

Hey Congratulations to you Very Happy
You know, I've never had a bird quite so young that they weren't able to balance properly, so I'm afraid I really don't know what to tell you.
I would imagine, tho, as with every thing else, it will just take him a while to learn. Do you keep his perches close to the ground just in case he falls?

I would really love to see some pictures of your little baby! I love the name too Very Happy

I do keep his perches really low, and he sleeps in a little fleece tent on the bottom of his cage. He doesn't really fall so much as jump and flap around with absolutely no grace Smile

Awwww, he sounds like just such a little baby Very Happy

I've never lived with a quaker, but I do find them adorable, with their plump little faces!
Are you still hand feeding him?

I would like to encourage you to start a Fluffies home page & diary where you could record his progress & share with all of us here, I would love to keep updated on his progress!
