Hello everyone! I am soo glad that I have found this site. My family has been given a QP name Zoe. (The previous owners who only had her for about one month moved out of state and could not take her) I have three girls all of who would love to be the best of friends with Zoe. We have had Zoe for about 1 1/2 weeks and she seems to be adjusting to our home. I am new to owning a bird and having difficulties getting Zoe not to bite everyone! I have learned through your website that you need to not give a reaction when they bite and even put them back in their cage when they bite but unfortunately she has so to speak "forgotten" how to step-up. I have been researching on how to get Zoe to stop biting and how to teach her good behavior but I am not having any luck. Can someone give me some advice or even head me in the right direction for materials that will teach me to teach her? I purchased a Parrot book from our local pet store but unfortunately it did not give me much information on teaching her. We are all looking forward to loving her but she doesn't seem to want to love back. |

Hi Tammy & Zoe! Welcome to fluffies!
How's the stepping up at the moment? Does she do it again?
If not, are her wings clipped?
You might want to practice the stepping up in a neutral room. This might work better than in her cage.
Do you have photos of Zoe? You can put them in your diary or homepage here.. |

Hi there Tammy.
Welcome to the forum.
Congrats on the new QP. Can I firstly ask how old is she please?
Treat her as a bird that needs training from the very start. if you can get her out and take her to a neutral room like Sue has mention. Use a dowel stick as your tool to teach her to step up and when she does, praise and praise and praise her.. and even give her treats!! That's if she has an absolute favourite treat. Hold that treat for training purposes only.
1 1/2 week isn't long at all... and also on top of loosing her previous owner, she's probably a bit confused as to what's happening to her....
Zoe may still be settling in and getting used to the environment. She need time to get to know her new family. You can try just sitting there talking to her softly beside her cage without any physical contact. try giving her little bits of treats while you do that. You know you could even read a book to her!! I know it sounds crazy.. but any sort of interation is good interaction with the new bird. You can always ask your three little ones to help you out and read the book for Zoe if you feel like a fool doing it.. hehe.. I know I do, but hey, I still do it.. hehe.
I think you just need to give it sometimes still... and then by using the dowel stick to teach step up, I think you shouldn't have any problem training it. Good luck. Let us know how you're going.
Cheers

Thank you both so much for your reply and help! I agree that maybe we are just expecting too much out of her for only being with us for a short period of time. Zoe loves it when I talk to her and I whistle to her all the time.
I will try working on both of your suggestions and giving Zoe time to adjust.
As for pictures of her, I would love to send some to you. I have kind-of a silly question though....will it hurt Zoe or scare her if I take the photo using the flash?
Thank you again and I will keep you posted.

Hi Tammy and Zoe,
Welcome here...
I take photos of my parrot with a flash and he does not seem to mind - although I would wait a while yet as it sounds as if Zoe needs more adjustment time...
She could be biting as she does not trust you you yet.... Give her time and I am sure that she will be all over you....
I agree with what Bih and Sue said - they are more experianced than me...
Hope you enjoy the site and I look forward to more stories and photos of your Fid...
Cheers

Good News Zoe allowed my daughter to get her out of the cage tonight. She brought her to the sofa and she allowed us to give her some interaction without the painful biting! We were so excited and Zoe started laughing right along with us. She did a lot of researching with her tough and beak on my hands. She was attempting to remove any scabs that she could find and was making a purring type noise when doing it. And when it was time for Zoe to go to bed, Caitlin was able to get her to step up and put her back in the cage. I was so excited I wanted to share the good news !
I will keep everyone updated on her progress. We will gladly share some photos as soon as I think Zoe is ready for the camera.

i just wanted to let everyone know that Zoe is adjusting well. She loves to sit on my shoulder and give me kisses. I plan to let her continue adjusting through the week and then attempting to take photos this weekend. Any suggestions on posting the photos? Thanks, Tammy and Zoe |

Thanks so much for your update!
If you post photo, could you upload them into your diary/homepage? They should be under 100kb of size. You can change the size with these programs: www.gimp.org and resize2mail.com (last one is easier to use) |

Hey Tammy.. sorry it took me so long to reply!! I somehow missed this post after I posted the first time..
I'm so glad though to hear that Zoe is coming along sooo nicely!! you'll have her cuddling with you in no time!
Flash photography should be fine... as long as you're not doing it in a totally dark room where she can't see you to start off with.. that might scare her a bit and send her into fright!! but I'm sure that won't happen coz you won't know where she's at and you won't know where to point the camera!! LOL.. ok, I'll stop that now. hehe
Can't wait to see some pics.. I think those little quakers are just soooo beautiful!!! |
