Well, if anyone ever has a translation problem, just send an e-mail to me with the question you have. Since I read, speak and write several languages ( dutch, english, french, german and italian) I can mostly find ways to translate. Sometimes I sense the correct meaning, and otherwise i know how to ask if it's about idiomatic things. Sometimes the english language of native speakers differs a lot. I have a correspondence for years with americans, british, scottish, australian and other people so I know this problem! |

No problem, Greg! It's something I really love to do. Hahaha last year in Bologna I was going to see an opera with Andrea Bocelli, and we met with several people in a hotel lobby. The conversation was in german, english, french and italian. There was a lady who spoke english and italian, two others who spoke german, english and italian, another who spoke french and italian, her daughter-in-law who spoke french and english, and two german ladies who only spoke their own language. Very funny! At the opera I also met a lady from South Africa, so I even spoke some dutch there... And of course some befriended italian-only speakers... |

Well, I was taught most of them at school. Only italian I learned in a special way. I once wrote a letter to Edi Bocelli, the mother of the famous tenor, because I was advised to contact people I knew if I wanted to find a job in Italy. The only italian I knew at the time was Andrea Bocelli, whom I met a year earlier. She invited me, and I spent some time with her, helping her with house rentals. Since she speaks italian only ( and an occasional word in french) I learned to speak italian in no time. You can imagine how grateful I am for her being my italian teacher! Speaking french, however, was also a special experience: I was on a short trip with a friend who had been living in Nice for a year. So her french was fluent, and I, though I had good points for my french at school, could hardly speak a word. But...we were visiting a young friend of hers, who plundered his dad's liquor closet, and asked if I would like a gin. I said yes, and from that moment on my french has been fluent! At my school exams I was rather bored, so I amused myself by writing short stories in the different languages. No, I don't always have the time for studying languages. I have three courses in celtic languages here, because I also sing celtic music, and would like to sing them in the original language. Because I lack the time to do so, I limited myself so far to a few songs in welsh... I also tried to learn polish, because we were on holiday there, but I didn't come much further than "dien dobre"and "nje rozumjem!" |
