Hmmm I didn't think my heritage is that exotic really.. but I guess it's because it's pretty 'normal' to me.. hehe.

hmmm I know five different dialects... Plus, I can understand a couple more other dialect but I can't speak it.
Oh also add Malay (a little) to my list of languages.
Cheeta, are these dialects close to each other? I mean, can people understand each other without actually speaking the other dialect?
Well lets see... if speaking to to true form of the dialects, meaning no regional slangs and jargons and all that. No they are quote different. But due to the 'mixture' of the different dialects in a populations, some seems to be loosing it's true form. Hainanese and Hokkien can have similar sounding words, so you can understand part of conversation, but usually never the whole thing. Mandarin and Cantonese are totally different language, and Hakka is a mixture of dialects mixed into one basically.... soooo it can be very confusing unless you know a whole lot of dialect, and I'm talking about may be ten upwards. Hakka took me to longest to learn, and technically I'm still learning it. |

OMG! Did this happen in the Netherlands?!
Dutch uses a lot of English words, nowadays. There's also some French in it. And I'm sure it sounds to you like German. But some things are very different.
In Dutch a lake is meer and the sea is zee.
In German a lake is see and the sea meer.
Quite funny!
Yes, it was in the Netherlands. And yes, one can make a lot of funny mistakes trying to figure out a new language without a dictionary!
Do you know anything about the Swiss dialect? It was so pretty-- almost like yodeling! I wonder if my Swiss ancestors got confused about See and Meer. They built themselves a 30 foot boat and crossed the ocean in it. Can you imagine? Maybe they thought they were crossing a big Lake Geneva! |

I studied Spanish for 3 years and used to be able to have conversations and stuff, but as I haven't really used it, I'm slowly forgeting most of it. Other than that I speak English and Persian. Persian is my first language, but believe it or not I'm more fluent in English than Persian

This is interesting! I like to hear about other people's cultures around the world...
I am of Japanese decent, but I am 4th generation American, so embarrassingly, I can only speak English!!
My parents and grandparents are from California, Hawaii, and Utah! I can also stumble through a little Spanish, but I wish I knew more being here in Southern California.
