Bald Parrot
A New Species of Brazilian Parrot?

Readers of the Guardian on May 20th 2002 who were also parrot lovers read a sensational story that went like this: ‘A new species of parrot has been discovered – and to the astonishment of ornithologists it is bald.’

Parrot enthusiasts know that a bald parrot could no more survive in the wild than the new breed of naked chicken that was featured on television during the same week! The word ‘bald’ is open to interpretation here. To bird enthusiasts it conjures up the picture of a featherless creature, perhaps an unfortunate bird suffering from psittacine beak and feather disease. But the story concerns a parrot with no feathers on its head, from the Mato Grosso region of Brazil.
Those who know their parrots are aware that such a species already exists, the Vulturine Parrot (Gypopsitta vulturina) from north-eastern Brazil, which inhabits the states of Amazonas and Para. Mato Grosso is immediately to the south of both of these states. Does this discovery – but a single bird has been seen so far – indicate an extension of the range of the Vulturine, or is it a previously undescribed species or sub-species?
The Guardian report referred to a story in a Brazilian bird magazine. Guessing that this referred to Atualidades Ornitologicas, I rummaged in a pile of magazines that awaited my return from an overseas trip to find the magazine in question. There I found an excellent artist’s reproduction of the bird in question! Apart from the colour of the cere and the skin surrounding it (possibly illustrated in error as pale grey), I failed to see how it differed from the Vulturine Parrot. A Brazilian friend had the rare opportunity to keep a pair of Vulturines during the late 1980’s. The cere and the bare skin on the head are yellow in adult birds. Young birds have green feathers on the head; these are lost as they mature.
According to the story in Portuguese in the Brazilian magazine, the American ornithological magazine Auk will shortly be publishing an item about the mysterious parrot, presenting it as a new species. If so, will this be the first time that a new species has been described from a photograph? The magazine also provided the information that it was seen in the extreme north of Mato Grosso state. This makes the likelihood of it being the Vulturine Parrot or one closely related to it even more likely, in my opinion.
Asked for his comment by the Guardian, Tony Juniper, co-author of A Guide to the Parrots of the World, said: ‘The Mato Grosso, on the edge of the Amazon, is a forest which is rapidly being cut down for turning into ranches and for timber, so even if it is discovered we may be in danger of making the bald parrot extinct. We urgently need to find out more about this species.’ |

hijs gaaf! wel een beetje roofvogelkop,..maarja..ze hadden die zwarte variant in bali! ik had hem op mijn arm! zooooo vet, helemaal als ze je dan vertellen dat ze ontiegelijk weinig in gevangenschap voorkomen!  |
