Een stukje waarom avocado niet goed is voor vogels. Het gaat om de stof persin.
Persin is a fungicidal toxin present in the avocado.[1] It is generally harmless to humans, but when consumed by domestic animals in large quantities it is dangerous. It has been suggested as a treatment for breast cancer.[2]
The chemistry of persin is not yet understood, but it is similar to a fatty acid, carried in an oil, and it leaches into the body of the fruit from the pits. Negative effects in humans seem to be primarily in allergic individuals.
Feeding guacamole or any part of the avocado plant to any non-human animal should be avoided completely. Consumption of the leaves and bark of the avocado tree, or the skin and pit of the avocado fruit have been shown to have the following affects:
In birds (which are particularly sensitive to the avocado toxin), the symptoms are: increased heart rate, myocardial tissue damage, labored breathing, disordered plumage, unrest, weakness, and apathy. High doses cause acute respiratory syndrome (asphyxia), with death approximately 12 to 24 hours after consumption.

Ik wist wel dat advocado gevaarlijk is voor een papegaai
maar wist eigenlijk niet waarom  Een stof, en ook nog eens gevaarlijk voor een hart van een papegaai?! interessant!

Inderdaad, we wisten dat het niet mocht maar na het lezen van dit stuk is het helemaal duidelijk waarom ze het absoluut niet mogen krijgen. Echt een goed stuk om eens te lezen, weer wat wijzer geworden. Thanks Sue |
